In May 2013, I was officially being GASS member when I was 2nd year 4th semester. It feels like "Yeah, finally i can make it" because I applied for other 3 organizations (TA, ALRCS, and FLAG) in APU more than 3 times but i didn't pass, but i applied for GASS only once but i passed. I have 3 goals in GASS:
1. I want to find out what i can contribute for team and organization
2. Find out what's my real strength
3. Learn about team work and leadership
2013 Period
My first GASS team is Opening Kaijou, the team that make short drama in millennium hall which explain about APU such as multicultural environment, multicultural week, bilingual communication, etc. I didn't join July OC due to class, so i only join 2013 August OC. At that time, I was being Indonesian students who looking for Indonesian Week participant and Muslims who fasting during Ramadhan. It's first time for me to play drama in Japanese language so i was a little bit nervous with my Japanese but I could speak fluently on the stage and can explain about Ramadhan and Indonesia in Japanese language. It's very great experience and opportunity to introduce Indonesia and Ramadhan in Japanese language in front of many Japanese high school students. I also delighted to work with amazing people in Opening Kaijou. They help me so much in practice and because of their help, I can talk in Japanese fluently based on script.
In October 2013, I participated in APU 体験 (Taiken) DAY. It is APU university seminar which held in other big cities such as Osaka, Fukuoka, Tokyo, and Hokkaido. I was representative in Osaka and Fukuoka with other 3 GASS members which are Ai, Jihyang, and Vietnamese girl Zang. Our presentation theme is our schedule in one day and how we manage our time. Again, it's first time for me to have a real Japanese presentation in front of Japanese high school students. Even my Japanese wasn't good at that time, but i practice a lot and keep confident in front of audiences. While normal Japanese presentation is quite formal, i tried to present in flexible way by speaking in funny ways and smiling but of course i didn't forget the message for Japanese high school students and the topic that i have to present. It works, everyone start to laughing, being flexible, and the atmosphere was so fun so it's easy for me to talk everything in Japanese because they enjoy my presentation. I was glad that it works because i'm afraid they didn't feel comfortable but they enjoy my presentation so i was glad. Also, it was fun trip with those three girls, even i'm the only one boy in there but they didn't ignore me and we had good relationship after that.
In October 2013 OC, I was moved to Kyoushitsu Kikaku (class project) team. At that time, our project was top show like Quiz show. We divided visitors (most of them high school students) into 3 groups, and to answer the question that comes out in screen, they had to take a flag that we put in the middle of class. The highest score is the winner. I was being MC for this Quiz show with Tsumugi. Tsumugi speak in Japanese and I speak in English. Tsumugi the one who explain the rule and i'm the one who make fun atmosphere. Our project was success, the high school students can enjoy and laugh during the event. They made new friends who also high school students from other cities. I also happy to work for Kyoshitsu Kikaku which lead by Chigusa Aramaki. Thanks to her and all Kyoshitsu Kikaku who supported my idea since this quiz show was my idea.
After October OC, the soumu (GASS top managers) was changed. At that time, the old soumu also give all GASS members opportunity to speak our opinion about GASS and its problems. I was like "finally, this section come" because as multicultural organization, GASS has big problem in communication between Japanese members and International students members. There was big gap between them and it makes distant between Japanese students and International students in GASS. There's also stereotype behind and I think it's not good for GASS because we work together to achieve GASS's goals and mission so I was talk with old soumu, the new soumu, my kyoshitsu kikaku leader, and batch 14 about the problems and what International students feeling. I was surprise that the international students critics GASS but they didn't share their opinion in front of soumu and all members. Too many gossip and behind talk, so I did my best to tell the truth feeling of International students and the solution to new soumu, and batch 13-14. While there's members who pessimist that GASS problems will never be solved, but i believe every problems have its solution. It's impossible for organization that don't have problems since there no perfect human, but i believe there's solution if we want to work hard to find out the solution. Also, many members who thinking to leave GASS and they tried to influence me, but if i leave GASS without doing nothing or try to solve problems, i feel useless and losers, and it's not gentleman that i dream. So, I try to be patient and try to find the solution with other GASS members because this is GASS problems so it's all members responsibility to solve it.
2014 Period
In March 2014, I was participate once again in University seminar. This time i went to Tokyo and Nagoya with Atsuko and Tomoko. Our presentation topic was APU experience and what we learn from that. Again, I tried to do same presentation style like what i did in Osaka, but this time i didn't feel success because they didn't understand what i'm trying to say because of my Japanese was terrible. I learn how to manage my time in presentation and speak in easy way in Japanese. I will do better next time if i have opportunity to do presentation again.
From April to May 2014, I joined for GASS entrance ceremony for new members which is batch 15. I was trusted by soumu to be leader of 2014 GASS entrance ceremony and i work with fantastic members those are Taka, Tatsuya, Arashi my vice leader, Zang, Rinko, Riho, and Tsumugi. We made a surprise for batch 15 and having a dinner, then we have games, and we finished by taking picture together. I was delighted to be GASS entrance ceremony leader because that was first time for me to be a leader of a big event for my organization. I was happy that i trusted by everyone to be entrance ceremony leader and help me during entrance ceremony preparation. I also find out my role in team and what i can give and contribute for team after entrance ceremony. I learn to be open-minded and be a good listener in order to be a good leader.
Now i know what i can give for my team and explore my potential, so i had big confidence to face a challenge in kyoshitsu kikaku for July and August 2014 OC. In July OC, i didn't have big role since i was sick and fasting at that time but in August OC i was being MC with Thai girl Mill in our project called "Being Agent". It's game that one person take a picture in paper book on their head and others give him/her clue with body language. I was also happy to have partner like Mill because she's so cheerful, happy girl, and creative. She helped me so much when we decided our role play from beginning until the end, it was big big big success. The visitors enjoy and feel happy to participate in our class project. It was the best project that i ever did in my GASS life and it's also the end of my work in Open Campus with GASS.
July and August 2014 OC was the best OC that i ever had. I was working with amazing and fantastic members in kyoshitsu kikaku. We're getting closer and we're like family with our leader Shine and vice leader Zang. They are like our Dad and Mom hahahaha. This is the best team ever in my GASS life and I was so happy to work with them. I'm so sad that it's my last team in my GASS life but I know they can do better in next OC because they made July and August OC success. Our kyoshitsu kikaku mission also accomplished which is "Make the best and memorable OC not only for visitors but also for kyoshitsu kikaku members". I couldn't explain how happy i am work with them and give me the best memory in my last OC with GASS.
Like what i said before, I believe inside the big problems, there must be solution. I got this belief from Islam holly book, Al-Qur'an, surah Al-Insyirah 6-7. That's why i didn't think to quit GASS when we had big problems because i won't suffer against problems. I want to do my best to solve GASS problems, and leave GASS with proud feeling. It's impossible for one organization to don't have problem. There must be problem and as organization members, we have to put our commitment and hard work for solve that problem to achieve organization goal. Only a loser who runaway from problem. I won't be a man like that. A gentleman that i dream is a man who never give up and suffer against problem. A gentleman that i dream is the man who put his commitment, hard work, and be responsible to solve his organization or society problems. Also, I want to find out the reason why i didn't pass FLAG, TA, and ALRCS even i applied for 3 times but why i passed GASS even i only apply once. There must be reason of that because everything that happen in our life, there must be a reason behind that and we have to find out that reason.
For GASS members who read this blog, I believe GASS have bright future and can make better open campus every year because you guys are fantastic and creative. Remember! We're not professional, we only university students that in process of being adult so we can't expect everything is according to our wish. There's no perfect human in this world, but we are here to perfecting each other. I have my own weakness and you guys fulfill it, and you guys have your own weakness and i fulfill it. That's life should be. Since we're not professional, we learn how to be professional and you guys have an opportunity to learn that in GASS. There are a lot of APU students who want to join GASS but they rejected but you guys passed. So, you guys are the chosen one and you guys must explore this opportunity. Don't have "talk less, do more" in your head because without talking, how you can say what you want to say. Without talking, it's impossible to communicate with others. Language is not problem, because if you have brave heart to speak, then others will try to understand. So, please speak and talk in good way, in good language, so that there will be no communication problems especially communication between Japanese students and International students. I wish all the best for GASS and I will help from outside even i'm not officially GASS member anymore
Finally, I would like to say thank you for soumu period 2012-2013 (Hiroki, Jihyang, Mai, Ryota, Jung, Ako) who give me a chance to join GASS in 2013 especially Mai and Jihyang who always listen my problems and opinion. In GASS, I got a lot of opportunity to explore my potential, and learn leadership and team work. This is the opportunity that I looking for in APU, and GASS has give me a lot. That's why I think just say thank you is not enough to show my gratitude. I'm delighted to be a part of GASS members and batch 14. Good luck for next OC!
